Our Heritage..........

A Warm Spot In The Heart of the Community

1972 Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it;

2002 except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Psalm 127:1

On Wednesday, February 10, 1972, an advertisement appeared in "The Leader", a neighborhood newspaper, asking persons who were interested in forming a Baptist Church in the Mt. Airy Community to meet at 1121 E. Johnson Street.  Present at this meeting were Rev. Joseph H. Haggler Jr., Rev. Thomas Gilmore, Mrs. Yvonne Stevenson and Mrs. Clara Blake in whose home the meeting was held.  Rev. Haggler became our first pastor.

In September, 1972, the church incorporated for the purpose of buying a building.  It was during this month that we were invited to join the Southern Baptist Convention.  We purchased the Dale's Memorial Presbyterian Church at Cedar Park Avenue and Haines Street.  The building was dedicated on December 10, 1972.  At the request of the Presbytery the rear chapel is named Dale's Memorial Hall to perpetuate the name of the former church.  The lower floor chapel was dedicated as the Joseph H. Haggler Hall.

Due to the illness and subsequent retirement of Rev. Haggler, Rev. Donald Young was called to pastor in March of 1975.  By 1976 a group of dedicated members had completed building the baptismal pool.

In June of 1983, Rev. Willis A. Brown was called to pastor.  Under his leadership we have continued to grow.  We burned the mortgage on our building in 1990.  Our Christian Education Child Care Center opened September 13, 1993.  In 1995, we acquired a six unit apartment building and a corner commercial property currently under renovation.  The use of other properties as emergency housing when needed, permanent housing for seniors and disabled members, many lives have been touched and changed.  Many have grown spiritually, acquiring a thirst for and becoming students of the word.

We "Minister to the Whole" through many active Ministries and Guilds along with regular Bible Study & Prayer, Women's & Men's Fellowships, Youth Ministry and more.  As we look forward to major expansion and renovations we give all Honor & Praise to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for he has truly blessed us to be a light in the community.
